It is no coincidence that music became much more complex at the same time as more refined notation systems emerged. No coincidence that Xenakis sounds so different from his peers. That algorithmic music took off with the invention of computers.
The music we compose and the systems and media we choose to compose it with are tightly intertwined. However, we seldomly think about programming languages and code in terms of what they offer compositionally. How might they shape what's possible and how can we take inspiration from concepts and structures that emerge from their usage? What changes, as we move from the likes of Max/MSP to more generic programming languages?

Browser-based Augmented Reality combined with WebAudio:
This workshop will offer an introduction to the open source library MindAR by HiuKim Yuen, for using augmented reality (AR) in browsers. We will use a ThreeJS environment, so most coding will be done with JavaScript. We will follow a basic tutorial to get an image-based AR functionality to work. In addition we will look at ways how to combine sound generated in WebAudio with AR. Also we will discuss criteria for choosing stable target-images for AR.

The participants should have basic familiarity with JavaScript. No advanced knowledge of coding or WebAudio is necessary.

The Web Audio API is the low-level API for audio processing in the browser. This means that even though you might not use it directly, every audio library or framework is going to rely on it under the hood. In this workshop we are going to look at what the Web Audio API has to offer, how it works and where it falls short. We will talk about when to use it and when to prefer high-level frameworks.

Platforms and practices for sound live coding ensembles. Estuary is a platform for collaborative live coding including developing for the browser using the functional programming language Haskell while scaling up to a language-neutral or multi-lingual approach. The workshop will cover strategies for online jamming and ensembles and will be an introduction to Tidalcycles. No prior experience necessary! A laptop or computer and headphones is required to participate.
